Intralipid, the excipient of propofol, was chosen as placebo as it is devoid of antiemetic effects. Sedation scores, respiratory and cardiovascular variables, and incidence of PONV were assessed We report on the use of propofol in 35 patients. In 22 patients, propofol was used for palliative sedation when treatment with benzodiazepines had failed. The mean dose range during treatment was between 0.90 and 2.13mg/kg/h. The effect was assessed as good or very good in 91% of the patients. clude antiemetic and antipruritic effects, as well as bronchodilatation.

Propofol versus thiopental in middle ear surgery. In a double-blind, randomized trial, Honkavaara et al. compared the antiemetic efficacy of thiopental (1.0 mg/kg) versus propofol (0.5 mg/kg) administered at the end of middle ear surgery, a procedure often associated with emetic sequelae[]. Although propofol was initially accepted as an induction and maintenance hypnotic agent, its clinical use has remarkably expanded over the past 30 years. In this study, we focused on unique antiemetic properties of propofol.
2019-09-14 · Other reports suggest that the antiemetic effect of propofol is due to modulation of the subcortical pathways . Patients who received propofol experienced a significant reduction in nausea and vomiting compared with patients treated with placebo.
BACKGROUND: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) commonly occur after general anesthesia, especially in women. There is evidence that the antiemetic effect of propofol is associated with a defined plasma concentration range; mean, 343 ng/mL (10–90% confidence intervals [CI] 200–600 ng/mL).
Oct 11, 2018 Today we will review: clinical use, characteristics and mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, physiologic effects, and side effects. By the end
The incidence of nausea significantly lower in the propofol 0.5 and propofol 1.0 groups than in the control group (12.1 vs 14.7 vs 40%). During the first postoperative 2 hours, antiemetics were Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are unpleasant, often underestimated side effects of anaesthesia and surgery, not devoid of medical complications. Prevention with antiemetics is only partially effective. Propofol has been shown recently to possess antiemetic properties in several situations. In this prospective, randomized, controlled trial, we have compared the antiemetic efficacy … 1996-10-01 Antiemetic effect of propofol Anaesthesia is a stressful specialty and if stress-associated conditions are more common in anaesthetists than in other hospital specialists this may be partly due to the lower status and prestige which has historically dogged the profession, especially in comparison to … 1996-10-01 Antiemetic effect of propofol administered at the end of surgery in laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy Eu-Gene Kim, Hye Jin Park, Hyoseok Kang, Juyoun Choi, and Hyun Jeong Lee Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Eulji General Hospital, Eulji University College of … 2014-03-28 Propofol is known to possess direct antiemetic effects. Its use for induction and maintenance of anaesthesia has been shown to be associated with a lower incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) when compared to any other anaesthetic drug or technique. However, its mechanism of action in this context is still not well understood.
After the introduction of propofol as an agent for induction and maintenance of anesthes
The effects of low dose propofol for prophylaxis of PONV were studied in 172 patients undergoing breast and abdominal surgery. Propofol prophylaxis was compared with a multidrug regimen consisting of dexamethasone and three antiemetic drugs, ondansetron, droperidol and metoclopramide. Propofol versus thiopental in middle ear surgery. Propofol has been shown recently to possess antiemetic properties in several situations. In this prospective, randomized, controlled trial, we have compared the antiemetic efficacy of subhypnotic doses of propofol, with Intralipid as placebo, after thyroidectomy.
Antiemetic effect of propofol administered at the end of surgery in laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy. BACKGROUND: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) commonly occur after general anesthesia, especially in women. 2000-06-01 · Studies confirming the efficacy of propofol as an antiemetic almost invariably have involved the Post operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) remains one of the most common and distressing complications after surgery resulting in pain, hematoma and wound dehiscence.

INTRODUCTION: Propofol general anesthesia has been shown to increase the antiemetic effect of ondansetron and inapsine (1). However, low dose propofol (10 mcg/kg/min) by continuous infusion has shown inconsistent results as an antiemetic (2,3). There is no published data on low dose propofol in combination with other antiemetics. The antiemetic effect of propofol is attributed to modulation of subcortical pathways to inhibit nausea or its direct depressant action on the vomiting center . The results of our study are consistent with other studies, conducted in different settings, in terms of antiemetic rescue therapy requirements and trends of dexamethasone preventive effect [ 22 , 23 , 25 , 30 , 31 ].
